    Human Resource management refers to the rational and consistent approach that an organization uses to manage its employees who are their most important asset as they collectively contribute significantly to the growth and development of the business. 
    HRM is that division of the company that is solely concerned with employees. It handles activities that relate to employees such as recruiting and selecting new employees and training them about their duties, retaining the employees, performance management, compensation and benefits, and workplace safety among so many others. Human Resource Management also refers to the personnel function which is concerned with procurement, development, compensation, integration, and maintenance of the employees of an organization for the purpose of contributing towards the accomplishments of the organization’s purposes.
    In an organization, it is vital that there is a human resources department as it eases employment in any business. HRM has a number of essential functions, including job design and analysis, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, and so many others. The HR is responsible for; recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, and employee relations among others.  The scope of Human Resource Management primarily includes recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new employees. It also covers employee relations, benefits, and payment. HRM’s scope has recently expanded to incorporate strategic planning, management, and employee development.
    HRM is noteworthy to organizations as it helps them in retaining their best employees who play a significant part in organizational development. As a result, organizations whose aim is to maintain their competitive advantage in the current times and in the future, need manpower that is well acquainted with current skills and technologies to approach change and difficulties that might come their way.

    1.0 INTRODUCTION


    Human Resource Management refers to the process of managing the people who work for an organization. It involves planning, recruiting, selecting, training, developing, rewarding, and retaining employees. HRM also deals with issues such as employee relations, performance management, health and safety, diversity and inclusion, and ethics. This essay will examine the significance of HRM and how it has increased competition between various businesses in the current economic situation.

    According to Armstrong (2003), the primary function of Human Resource Management in the current economies is to cautiously come up with strategic ideas that are to enable the business to achieve their set goals and objectives on the other hand, it provides businesses with various ways on how to handle their employees so as to see to it that the business is successful in one way or another.

    The concept of HRM has evolved over time, from a traditional personnel management function that focused on administrative tasks such as hiring, firing, and payroll, to a strategic partner that aligns human capital with the organization's vision, mission, and values. HRM is now seen as a source of competitive advantage that can enhance organizational performance, innovation, and sustainability.

    HRM can be examined from different perspectives, such as the normative, descriptive, critical, and integrative perspectives. The normative perspective prescribes what HRM should do to achieve optimal outcomes for the organization and its stakeholders. The descriptive perspective describes what HRM actually does in practice and how it varies across contexts and cultures. The critical perspective critiques HRM for its potential negative impacts on employees, society, and the environment. The integrative perspective seeks to reconcile the different perspectives and create a holistic understanding of HRM.

    Some of the key functions of HRM are;

    Human resource planning: This is a process of identifying, analyzing, and forecasting the needs and availability of human resources in an organization. It involves aligning the human resource strategy with the organizational goals and objectives, and ensuring that the right people are in the right place at the right time.

    Recruitment and selection: Recruitment and selection is the process of procuring human resources into organizations. It can also be defined as the art of determining and obtaining potential employees for a vacant position in an organization. Recruitment and selection processes are the procedures taken into account by an organization to find suitable applicants to occupy a vacant position.

    Performance management: Performance management refers to an important tool that organizations use or implement in order to achieve organizational success. This process converts human resources into performance. Performance management is the key tool that business managers use to identify, measure and develop the performance of their employees by aligning their performance with the strategic goals of an organization.

    HRM is a complex and dynamic field that requires constant adaptation to changing internal and external factors. HRM professionals need to have a broad range of competencies, such as analytical thinking, communication skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, ethical awareness, cultural sensitivity, and business acumen. It also requires collaboration with other functions within the organization, such as finance, marketing, operations, and strategy.

    By examining the concept of HRM from various angles, one can gain a deeper understanding of its nature, scope, challenges, opportunities, and implications for organizations and individuals.
