To What Extent Do Representations of Ethnic Minorities Continue to be Restricted in Contemporary Media

By: Jonathan Kush

This paper seeks to investigate the politics of representation in global media such as cinema, or TV. The author argues that representations of ethnic minorities continue to be restricted in contemporary media to a big extent. The essay shows how other ethnic minorities especially black or Arab people are still represented in a restricted way in the media. This restricted representation is in the form of the continued negative portrayal of blacks as savages for instance or Arabs as terrorists. This is in contrast to how the same media always shows white people in a positive light. Just like female gender representation in media is always sexualized, representations of other ethnic minorities are restricted because it is always negative, stereotypical and often degrading. So, there is a real restriction as shall be seen using examples.
