Discuss Whether Global Poverty is a Consequence of Insufficient Integration into World Markets

By: Jonathan K Kush

What is the relationship between globalisation, neo-liberalism, poverty and inequality? This essay delves into these questions and whether globalisation leads to greater or lesser poverty in the world and how this is possible if true. In analyzing the poverty issue, the problem of inequality was also raised. The essay had to find answers to key questions such as whether the world poverty headcount was increasing or decreasing. Is it possible for capitalism to simultaneously alleviate and reproduce poverty? What role has capitalism played in the global poverty and inequality issue? These complex questions have stocked a huge debate over the last decade or so. The Wade-Wolf (2002) exchange presented one such debate of these issues; however, much of the literature ignores the voices of the very people poverty affects in all of this but this essay does in the case study.
